Blood Pressure Classification
Classification of blood pressure levels for adults 18 years and older. Systolic pressure, the higher number of a blood pressure reading, is the pressure as the heart pumps; diastolic pressure is the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.

Normal* < 120 < 80 None.
Prehypertension 120-139 80-89 Lifestyle changes, including regular exercise, losing weight if overweight, quitting smoking, and eating a healthful, low-salt diet.
Stage 1 Hypertension 140-159 90-99 Lifestyle changes plus drug treatment with one or more drugs that include a diuretic.
Stage 2 Hypertension 160 and higher 100 and higher Lifestyle changes plus drug treatment with at least two drugs.
†Measured in millimeters of mercury.

*Unusually low readings should be evaluated by a physician.
